Gita Claassen

My work juxtaposes the old and the new, reality and whimsy, artificial and natural, and often contains subtle messages for those who care to delve deeper.

I’m influenced by fantasy and the natural world equally, and express thoughts and feelings through real elements and intentional use of colour.

The Karoo is my birthplace, my place of healing and of being, and through my work I pay homage to this arid, sacred, varied, beautiful land by revealing its contrast-y beauty and its colourful characters – the kind that breathes and those who don’t – in this ongoing project I’ve dubbed “Krie”.

‘Entitled' explores how animal agriculture, and specifically sheep farming activities, affect the Karoo landscape, the natural inhabitants, and ultimately, us. This series will be uncomfortable and not for sensitive viewers.

My roots are buried deep in the Karoo, and I'm privileged to spend much of my waking (and sometimes sleeping) hours blissfully immersed in this landscape, finding myself in remote places that few, if any, humans ever see, getting to know the intimate secrets of a country that teaches resilience and gratitude. I'm a passionate environmentalist seeking to plant the seed of enquiry, and my work celebrates the beauty, but also aims to expose and tackle the tough questions.’
