Brita Dolls Story

Brita Dolls were inspired by a dream… five years ago we were living in the Drakensberg and I received a phone call from my mom, who had had a dream of me making dolls.

I gave it some thought, since fashion is my passion… and one day I woke up, found  a suitable doll pattern, extended the legs and started to create my first doll. It took a lot of patience and practice and once she had become the doll she was meant to be I grew more enthusiastic and sewed and sewed until she had a few friends… The Valley Bakery Shop in Central Drakensberg was the first to display Brita Dolls and I was thrilled with the response! I became more creative, experimenting with various looks and colours and went for an African look.

That’s when the private orders started coming in and I started personalising the dolls. We moved back to the Northern Cape and I made more dolls after receiving yet more private orders and we then moved to Prince Albert and took some dolls on a trip to the Garden Route and they were sold in shops in Knysna and the Wilderness.

Now you can find Brita Dolls in Simons Town at the Silk Purse and at Canettevallei Lavender Farm gift shop in Stellenbosch.   Some of my dolls have even flown off to Germany and the USA. It’s a wonderfully creative endeavour and each doll has her own personality. I source off-cuts of of fabric for some of the outfits from some super professional clothing people and the sheep wool for the hair comes from a lady in Plettenberg Bay.

Making the dolls is tremendously time consuming and I now have a few people in the community helping me to make them.  So Brita Dolls have created jobs! I can’t mass produce but can make dolls to order, so if you’d like a Brita Doll contact me on 07274 44037  or
